Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 18:57, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Copyright violation - AmandaBlain.jpg
[edit]http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Amanda-Blain.jpg&action=edit&redlink=1 I specifically emailed the site and asked them to add the line to the top of the article http://www.girlfriendsocial.com/ottawalaunch.php as i was told to do in the IRC help desk. "Photos available for use by CC-BY-3.0 - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/" above the logo. Why was this removed/reported? Geek4gurl (talk) 20:15, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Hector Ruiz
[edit]Hi ukexpat, thanks for the note on my Talk page about the Hector Ruiz image. It is Mr. Ruiz who owns the copyright to this image and he has emailed the permissions desk with permission for its use under a CC-BY-3.0 license. I added an OTRS pending template on the image for this reason. As you can see, the image is from Mr Ruiz's website. It's been pointed out that the image is also on his profile at computerhope.com, but is appears likely that this site has borrowed the image from Mr. Ruiz's website. If I re-upload the image, is there additional information I need to provide as well as the OTRS pending template? Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (talk) 14:14, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hi again, just wanted to let you know that I've re-uploaded the file and left a note on the Talk page about the OTRS request, as well as including the OTRS template again. Mr. Ruiz received a reply from OTRS asking for the image to be uploaded, so I've included the ticket number that was provided, in case that helps. Please let me know if there's anything else I should do, since Mr. Ruiz is definitely the copyright holder of the image. Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (talk) 20:53, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

File:1st King's Dragoon Guards - badge.jpg was identified as a copyright violation by me earlier today because of a misunderstanding over permissions. That is why it was already tagged for deletion. I note you are quoting an OTRS ticket. Can you tell me what the content of that is please? It may well relate to e-mails exchanged between myself and others today. SonofSetanta (talk) 16:11, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
- I am sorry but I cannot disclose the contents of OTRS communications.--ukexpat (talk) 17:50, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't know that or I wouldn't have asked. I'm interested because there's one helluva dingdong going on about a certain gentleman who's been poaching badges and not asking permission from the copyright owners. I thought perhaps a webmaster had complained? That one was inadvertently uploaded by me which is why I tagged it for deletion. I thought I had permission but then found out the badge wasn't posted by my regular contact on a certain site. SonofSetanta (talk) 06:32, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:BritishEmpireWW1MemorialBrussel Copyright2004KaihsuTai cropped.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 04:20, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

File:AYAME.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Could you please, explain the reason for speedy deletion in a DR rather than set a {{speedy}} for a file with already pending DR? Ankry (talk) 19:22, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
[1] - wonderful! Thank you! Any other images you feel the urge to try this on? This was from the camera of Catriona Sparks, an Australian science fiction author in her own right, but also a prolific photographer of science fiction and fantasy authors. So far, every author image I have asked for her to make available under a Wikimedia Commons friendly license, she has done. If you feel the urge to browse her flickrstream and find a likely target or twelve ... --GRuban (talk) 21:19, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
File Tagging: Carol_Greider, Ph.D..jpg
[edit]Dear Ukexpat, I have emailed the permission to use the new photograph of Dr. Greider to the link you provided. However, Dr. Greider has done this on several occasions herself (for the same photo) and her Wikipedia reverts back to the incorrect photo anyway. I hope this time it sticks.
tagging files for deletion
[edit]Hi, in the future, please do not nominate files like File:Gary Kendall.jpg for speedy deletion, but tag them as missing permission. {{Copyvio}} is only suitable for cases where the author information is clearly wrong or it is very unlikely that we receive a release for the work. Thanks, FDMS 4 19:31, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
Two derivatives
[edit]Hi Ukexpat... You cropped a photo that it now turns out was probably incorrectly licensed (although as it was tagged as OTRS confirmed, you had no way of knowing that). As I have now nominated the original for deletion, the crops are also affected. Best regards, Storkk (talk) 13:51, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!
[edit]
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Ukexpat,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
--Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 08:43, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Your VFC installation method is deprecated
[edit]Hello Ukexpat, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:24, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
